Why 2027 Is the Perfect Year to Experience a Storm Chasing Tour

Why 2027 Is the Perfect Year to Experience a Storm Chasing Tour

A storm chasing tour offers a different kind of adventure from an ordinary vacation. Instead of following a fixed sightseeing itinerary, travelers follow developing weather across the Great Plains with professional forecasters, guides and drivers. The 2027 season provides several tour windows between early May and late June. This gives guests the opportunity to choose a package based on their available dates, preferred storm region, photography interests and desired number of chase days. All 2027 tours begin from Wichita, Kansas. From there, the team follows the strongest available weather rather than remaining within one city or state.

A Full Season of Tour Options

The 2027 schedule covers several stages of the severe-weather season. Early-May packages focus more heavily on the Southern Plains, while later tours follow the storm season as it moves toward Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and other northern areas. This seasonal variety means travelers are not limited to one type of storm or landscape. One package may emphasize classic Tornado Alley roads and Southern Plains supercells, while another may provide broad Central Plains scenery and isolated mothership-style storms.

The official 2027 schedule includes:

  • Tour 1: Six chase days from May 2–7, with arrival on May 1
  • Tour 2: Six chase days from May 9–14, with arrival on May 8
  • Tour 3: Six chase days from May 16–21, with arrival on May 15
  • Tour 4: Six chase days from May 23–28, with arrival on May 22
  • Tour 5: Six chase days from May 30–June 4, with arrival on May 29
  • Tour 5A: Ten chase days from May 30–June 8, with arrival on May 29
  • Tour 6: Six chase days from June 13–18, with arrival on June 12
  • Tour 7: Six chase days from June 20–25, with arrival on June 19

Tour 4 is currently listed with one seat remaining; Tours 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7 are marked as filling fast, and Tours 5 and 5A are listed as sold out. Availability can change as reservations are completed.

Different Parts of the Season Offer Different Experiences

Early May marks the beginning of the company’s Tornado Alley schedule. Tours 1 and 2 focus on the Southern Plains, where flat roads and open landscapes support flexible storm chasing. These tours may also pass near attractions such as the Twister Museum in Wakita, Oklahoma, when weather and available time permit.

Tour 3 moves into the peak Southern Plains period. Its six-day format provides a balance between tour length and cost while placing guests within one of the most active parts of the schedule. Tour 4 covers late May, which the operator identifies as a particularly intense stage of the season. It is promoted as one of the company’s strongest windows for severe storms and potential tornado encounters.

Late May and Early June Bring a Northward Shift

Tour 5 and the longer Tour 5A cover late May into early June. During this period, the chase strategy begins shifting northward while still including the classic Southern Plains. This transition may allow guests to experience intense Southern Plains supercells alongside more isolated and visually defined Central Plains storms. Tour 5A extends the experience to ten chase days and nine hotel nights. Spending more time in the field gives guests additional opportunities to work with changing weather patterns, different states and multiple storm systems.

Both 2027 packages are currently sold out, indicating strong demand for this part of the schedule. Travelers planning for future seasons may find it useful to reserve similar late-May packages early.

June Appeals to Photographers and Landscape Enthusiasts

Tours 6 and 7 continue following the severe-weather season northward. These packages may extend from traditional chasing areas near Oklahoma into Nebraska, South Dakota, and beyond. The Central and Northern Plains can offer expansive scenery, isolated supercells, dramatic lightning and unusual rural destinations. These conditions are especially attractive to photographers who want to show the storm within a wider landscape.

Tour 7 takes place during the northern part of the season. Depending on the route and available downtime, the journey may also bring guests near destinations such as Mount Rushmore or the Badlands. Weather always remains the priority, so sightseeing stops cannot be guaranteed.

Professional Support Makes the Experience More Accessible

Storm chasing independently requires forecasting knowledge, route planning, long-distance driving, hotel coordination and constant awareness of changing conditions. The guided packages manage these responsibilities for the guest. The six-day tours include five hotel nights, while Tour 5A includes nine hotel nights.

The packages also provide:

  • Transportation and fuel during the chase
  • Severe-weather forecast experts
  • Professional guides and drivers
  • Weather forecast briefings
  • A guaranteed window seat
  • Airport-to-hotel pickup and final airport drop-off
  • An exclusive storm chasing adventure tour shirt

Guests must arrange their own hotel rooms for the arrival day and the night following the final chase day.

Pricing and Booking Considerations

Most six-day 2027 packages cost between US$2,800 and US$2,900 for a single traveler. Listed shared-room couple rates range from US$2,600 to US$2,700. Tour 5A costs US$4,700 for a single traveler and lists a US$4,500 shared-room couple rate. A US$1,000 deposit is required to reserve a place on each package. For a shared-room discount, two tour seats must be added to the booking cart. Travelers must arrange their own companion or roommate before reserving.

Conclusion

The 2027 schedule provides options for early-season Southern Plains chasing, peak late-May activity, longer ten-day travel and visually impressive Central or Northern Plains adventures. Each package offers a different seasonal angle while providing professional forecasting, organized transportation, hotel accommodation during the chase, and experienced support. With several 2027 packages already filling quickly or sold out, travelers should compare the remaining tour dates carefully and reserve the package that best matches their schedule and storm chasing goals.
